The 34,797dwt semi-submersible vessel Seaway Albatross, converted out of the 1993-built tanker Tordis Knutsen in 2015, was recently employed to transport the Van Oord split hopper barges Pieter Caland and Cornelis Lely, along with the backhoe dredger Simson, to Burgas, Bulgaria, where they will be employed to dredge the port area to its required depth of 15.5m.
The 264m by 42.5m Seaway Albatross can be submerged to a water depth of 9.5m above the main deck for loading and discharging purposes, while the 5,400m 2 deck has a load rating of 30 tonnes per square metre. A speed of 13 knots is provided by a 20,000hp MAN B&W 6S70MC main engine, while accommodation is available for up to 39 people.
