MG Enthusiast  |  Vol.44 No.5 Octagon meets Oval
SPRING IS HERE, and that means Drive It Day will soon be upon us. This
annual event has been fostered by the Federation of British
Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC), and the premise is really quite
simple – to encourage as many classics as possible out onto the
road to celebrate our transport heritage and to show the world
how strong the classic car movement is today.
This year, Drive It Day is on Sunday 27 April and clubs up
and down the country will be arranging days for their members that usually combine a road run with a visit to one or more places of interest. To help in this regard, the FBHVC have arranged five venues that are
suitable for starting points, destinations or simply a visit en route. They are the Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire, the Brooklands Museum in Surrey, Bressingham Steam and Garden Centre in Norfolk, the
Cotswold Motoring Centre in Gloucestershire and the Lakeland Motor Museum in Cumbria. Volunteer marshals will
be on hand at all venues to explain any entry concessions
and to help with parking.
However, do remember that you don’t have to be part of an organised event to add your weight to the day. Just choosing to use your classic rather than the modern car for a family day out or a trip to the shops will
help to swell the estimated 250,000 vehicles that took part
in last year’s Drive It Day.
Whatever you do, don’t forget that this day is primarily about
celebrating. Classic cars invariably spread smiles and happiness wherever they go, but this will not necessarily be the case if other road users are held up by a mile-long procession travelling at 30mph. Let
common sense prevail and be considerate of other road users –
plenty of them may have somewhere more important to
be, and all of them will probably think they do! This common
courtesy is particularly important right now given the way that free historic road tax has been back in the news (see p6 for the full story of that).
