As spring turns to summer and much of the sowing and planting is done, we begin to think more about how to preserve all that lovely fruit and veg, and Home Farmer has it covered in a new seasonal feature by Gaby Bartai, which deals with seasonal month-by-month preserving and delicious recipes to enjoy your harvest. But don’t worry – we certainly haven’t turned our backs on planting and sowing just yet, with features on easy to grow and pick container salad and veg, planting a handy kitchen herb garden, planning a permaculture plot, providing support for beans, peas and squashes, and putting up a polytunnel. We’ve even had our in-house forager planting some of the scarcer forager’s favourites in his garden to take the pressure off what are sadly fast becoming threatened items in the countryside they once covered. And for our recipes we visit Herefordshire and Worcestershire, do some cooking with edible flowers, travel back in time to see how innovative cooks replaced scarce items during the Second World War, and we look at extending the role of an everyday kettle barbecue by turning it into an effective smoker. Our livestock section considers how best to deal with mite and other pests which plague our hens in warmer weather, looks in depth at the subject of honey, and we get an intimate look-in on lambing with the Tyne family on their Welsh smallholding, while our DIY supremo checks out the very latest in DIY solar panels to power the lighting in a larger shed. For anyone intent on enjoying the ‘good life’ there really is only one magazine that brings together all the different strands in an informative and fun way, and that’s Home Farmer - the magazine that makes the good life even better!
