FlyPast  |  November 2015
Welcome to the extended, 132-page November issue of FlyPast. This special issue pays tribute to a legend of British engineering, the de Havilland Mosquito. On November 25, 1940, the so-called ‘Wooden Wonder’ took to the air for the first time. To mark the 75th anniversary of the Mossie’s maiden flight, we present a series of features and images celebrating this remarkable creation.
Catalina in the Spotlight
Our 20+ page Spotlight section focuses on the famous Consolidated Catalina, perhaps the most well-loved amphibian of World War Two. We look at its history, profile those who flew the type and examine its role in warfare.
Liberator down
Nigel Walpole examines the events that led to the loss of Joe Kennedy Jr in a Consolidated B-24 Liberator.
Roar of the MiG
Charles Kennedy sampled a Cold War icon, the MiG-15, as it returned to Eastern Europe to begin a new life as a jet for hire.
Saluting The Few
We report from Biggin Hill where a special flypast took place to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain’s ‘hardest day’, August 18.
Great War flyer
Andrew Carter reflects on the challenges and joys of flying a newly built Fokker E.III Eindecker.
We also go behind the scenes at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and visit the US to check up on the restoration progress of a rare Boeing. Ian Black reports on the deployment of a Thunder City-operated English Electric Lightning to Namibia, while Robin Brooks steps back in time to profile the ‘weekend fliers’ of the RAF’s 500 ‘County of Kent’ Squadron. You’ll also discover images and reports from airshows around the world, plus news of a Spitfire used in the film ‘Battle of Britain’ that’s on its way to a new owner having been in storage for decades.
