It gives me great pleasure to be Guest Editor of the 250th edition of Dolls House and Miniature Scene Magazine. Miniatures, and specifically, dolls’ houses, have been around now for hundreds of years. Most of us who have been in the hobby for a few years know that dolls’ houses started out as pieces for rich households to display miniature furniture and artwork, often replicas of their own homes, always exquisite but also sometimes simply pieces created to show off the owners wealth.

Post 1945, generations of children grew up building
dolls’ houses from shoe boxes and having grand parents build mini-homes from scratch. In the 1980s, the age of mass-production in the Far East and the ‘baby-boomers’ reaching retirement age, the dolls’ house hobby hit it’s stride. A lost youth was recreated in the golden years, we were looking for a collectable, an heirloom, that we could pass on to future generations. Recently the hobby may have taken a hit during the recession, it may have lost out to technology but I believe, the longevity of Dolls House and Miniature Scene is testament to the continued inspiration that this hobby gives us all.

Dolls House and Miniature Scene has evolved to reflect our changing tastes and desires for our miniature residences, featuring clever projects, taking us through bespoke dolls’ houses and our own kit builds and creations. Whatever your skillset, however you choose to enjoy this hobby, Dolls House and Miniature Scene continues to be the premier magazine for inspiration and miniatures news.
