Spring is rolling in!
This month marks the 50th anniversary since Neal McCusker tenure as Commissioner for NSW Railways ended. The day after his retirement the department was reorganised into the Public Transport Commission changing the railways forever. Having held the position of Commissioner for 16 years, the length of his term as Commissioner was only exceeded by John Rae. For many railway enthusiasts the years of the McCusker era were the glory days of railways in the state. Trains operated to hundreds of destinations no longer serviced today. Railways held a greater position of prominence in society. During much of the period there were regular steam-hauled services. It was an era when there was great interest in the railways and various innovations were introduced to modernise the system.
