It's an issue that finds its first fire in the Pacific Northwest, where Mount St. Helens almost blew Washington State off the map in May 1980, then heads south to Wyoming where Steven Spielberg's cosmic classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind made a pop-culture mountain out of Devils Tower in 1977. Driving through Nebraska? Take a literary trip with “Sleepy Hollow” author Washington Irving to Scotts Bluff. Pausing in New Mexico? There's plenty to read at El Morro National Monument, where travelers have been leaving their names since the camels passed through. For a finale, we spend time at the five national monuments of New York City. Who knew Lady Liberty was in such grand company?
