As we reach the final months of 2021, it’s easy to feel a little gloomy at the prospect of the short days and long, cold nights that lie ahead. But, don’t get too downhearted! This issue’s content is aimed at lifting the spirits, so we can all face the forthcoming winter feeling positive, and determined to make the best of things!
Our lead feature looks at how you can keep on track with your dog’s training from the comfort of your own sitting room (see page 10) never mind what the weather’s like, and there will be more advice on this topic next issue too — just to keep you on your toes!

We’re also celebrating some remarkable canines — Rue is a fire service dog who has just earned the title of the UK’s Hardest Working Dog 2021, for her outstanding work uncovering vital evidence during investigations into fires that are suspicious or have involved a death. Alongside her intensive training, she’s also had to overcome her own anxiety problems, including a fear of people, so it’s little wonder that handler Lindsay Sielski is so proud of her dog’s achievements. Read Rue’s story on page 26.

Equally proud of their little dog, Daisy, are Pete and Mo Murden. Not only does Daisy act as diabetic Pete’s early warning system, alerting him when his blood sugar level is low, but the cute Jack Russell Terrier-cross was recently struck down with a serious illness that had even the vets scratching their heads. But the indomitable Daisy bounced back, from what Pete is convinced was a COVID-19 infection. Read her amazing story on page 38.

Finally, what better way to while away an autumn evening than by getting creative with your dog’s hair. Next time you get out
the grooming kit, rather than sending all that fluff off to landfill, you can transform it into a special keepsake — turn to page 53 for
some inspiring ideas.
