Outdoor Swimmer  |  January 22
Last month I walked 15 miles through Storm Barra from Kendal to Carnforth wearing only my trunks. “Why?” you may well ask. I was walking with Speedo Mick as part of his 2500-mile charity walk raising money for mental health charities. According to the World Health Organization, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental health problems at some point in their lives. Meanwhile, men accounted for around three-quarters of UK deaths by suicide in 2018. The recent growth in cold water swimming has been driven partly by interest in its mental health benefits, but come to the water and the majority of swimmers are often women. But a new wave of men’s groups are swimming explicitly for mental health, breaking down the barriers to men talking about their problems. In an issue in which we highlight men’s mental health, we meet one such group, the Edinburgh Blue Balls. In our history feature, Elaine Howley explores the open water legacy of father and son Ted and Jon Erikson. This issue we welcome two new columnists: GB ice swimmer Caroline Saxon explores the highs and lows of winter swimming; and writer Joe Minihane chronicles his exploration of his local area.
We hope you enjoy the issue and have a wonderful 2022.
