You may have listened to my talk on Scottish statutory records, held during this February’s Family History Month, in which I mentioned registration districts. At one point, Scotland had over 900 registration districts, which were nominally based on the parish boundaries of the Church of Scotland parishes. Each registration district had an appointed registrar, which certainly in the early years of registration, was often the individual who had been the session clerk for the Church of Scotland parish, or the parish schoolmaster. In larger registration districts, an assistant registrar would also be appointed.
In Nairn (pictured opposite), the first registrar was Willam D. Penny, who began his tenure at the start of registration in 1855. A local newspaper notes than in September 1877, when William retired, he was being paid £6 10s per annum. At this time, the Nairn registrar was appointed by the parochial board. By looking at all of the events recorded in a year, one can see if the assistant registrar took over whilst the registrar was absent.
For information on registrars and events concerning the registrar, it is worth searching records on the British Newspapers website www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk. Simply enter the word ‘registrar’ and the name of the district into the search box.You can find out more about the registration districts in this guide at National Records of Scotland: https://bit.ly/hsregistrar.
