Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom  |  September 2017
Salvage is such a big trend in interior design for restaurants and hotels right now, and I love seeing it finding its way into our kitchens too. This is epitomised by our striking cover story this issue, which features the home of reclaimed tile enthusiasts Chris and Emma. They were so drawn to the colour, pattern and texture of the raw Spanish encaustic designs, seen while travelling around in Andalucia, that they filled pallets with 25 tonnes of tiles and founded an import company – Maitland & Poate – on their return to London. These raw materials, along with rustic panelling and vintage furniture form the backbone of their creative cook space which now feels like a little slice of Seville on a traditional terrace in London. See A Reclaimed Masterpiece (page 22). Interior designer Nicola Harding had a similar approach to her rethink of the bedrooms and bathrooms at The Garden House hotel on the heritage property Beaverbrook House when she was tasked with reinventing it for the 21st century client. ‘I wanted guests to feel like they were entering somewhere unusual, with a sort of magical quality to it that they wouldn’t experience at home’, she says. To this end, the designer brought in materials, furniture and accessories that were either sourced from antique markets, salvage companies or made bespoke, which would give just the right amount of authenticity. She used heritage colours throughout the paintwork and commissioned artisan handmade wallpaper and artwork in keeping with the overall look. See The Past Regenerated on page 122 for inspiration that you can take home. Continuing on the old-made-new theme, staff writer Lucy Macdonald takes a look at our continuing penchant for mid-century furniture in Modern Movement. She delves into what exactly encapsulates ‘mid-century modern’ and suggests some of the signature styles from the era which are still filtering into the new looks we are seeing coming through now.
