GIANT STARS WHO DO THE JOB: TRAINING HEAVY HORSES IN SPORT
David Curtis was showing his team at East of England Show when his friend Owen Garner pulled in beside him. “I looked over and said, ‘I’ll buy that horse’,” recalls David. “We did the deal in the ring.” That was how he came to own the striking Percheron, Hales Hector, winner of the inaugural Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) Barber Family British ridden heavy horse of the year. In the six years since, Hales Hector — known as Tim — has won practically everything he’s entered: in-hand, in harness as part of a team, pair, tandem or single, ploughing matches and now the top ridden heavy horse accolade in the land.
