Volunteers at the castle
The project was kickstarted by Erik Crnkovich, then a student at the University of St Andrews, and brothers Douglas and Angus Bowden-Smith. The aim was simple: to combine serious research with affordability in order to give everyone an opportunity to learn about archaeology and rural history. Since then, the project has carried out over three years of fieldwork on the farm, given landscape tours and delivered public lectures around Scotland. We have quite a few archaeological discoveries under our belt, and lots of growth as archaeologists.
This year, we will be embarking on a new, more concerted effort to uncover the mysteries of Pittarthie castle and its place in the creation of the contemporary countryside.
