This issue, Trucking magazine is turning the spotlight onto heavy
haulage in an all-out celebration of monster rigs, mighty moves
and oversize operations. Kicking things off, we present our full and
frank review of the current top-power king: Volvo’s 750 bhp FH16.
The Swedish manufacturer has recently updated its flagship truck
to meet Euro 6 emissions regulations, and we were keen to find out how
the changes to design would affect operation. Long story short, we came
away very impressed indeed – though it has to be said there are few
haulage jobs in the UK that would require such an abundance of power.
You can read all about it in Driven, starting page 30.
Next up, CPL Transport (with help from Multiaxle) tackles an oversize
brewery vessels move in Manchester. The company took over the job when the previous contractor pulled out, and it took a fair bit of lateral thinking to shift the 10 vessels to their destination. Read how they managed it, starting page 40.
We also catch up with Allelys during a locomotive haul in Somerset (page 48), follow Mammoet’s record-breaking 450-tonne catalytic cracker transport on a 30-axle SPMT (page 60), and delve into the archives to count down the biggest classic heavy-haulers of yesteryear (page 52). Plus, we head to South Africa to learn more about Richard Bay Minerals’ four-trailer Western Star tippers. The outfits have been configured to offer improved stability, safety and payload – and are now able to gross 200 tonnes (see page 44). This was sadly the last Trucking article put together by our long-time contributor, Martin Phippard, before his untimely passing. As ever, his
article is engaging and enlightening – and it serves as a reminder of Martin’s infectious fascination with how heavy haulage operations are tackled in different parts of the world. He is still very sorely missed.

Good mix, great read

Really enjoy reading this on the iPad. Didn't think it would be as good as the printed magazine, but now I prefer it this way Révision 16 juillet 2013
