Toy Soldier & Model Figure  |  Issue 200
This month Daniel P. Jones chimes in with an article titled “Strike Up the Band!” He profiles Dave Leigh, whose specialized passion is collecting all sorts of miniature musicians.
Medieval warrior monks are the subject of an essay penned by Thor Johnson. His intriguing look at the history of Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic knights and other Christian military orders is illustrated by exquisite figures of his own making as proprietor of The AeroArt St. Petersburg Collection.
Much to TSMF Editor, Stuart Hessney’s dismay, he missed this the 34th Annual OTSN Inc. Chicago Toy Soldier Show as a result of the thousands of flight cancellations triggered by an arson fire at a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration control center. Although he was unable to attend he put together a show report enhanced by some great photos from ‘angels of mercy’ who came to his rescue.
Colin Romanick reports on the 6th Annual Military History Weekend in Williamsburg, Va., USA, Oct. 11-12. He surveys the event’s appeal to history buffs, military miniatures enthusiasts and wargamers of all ages.
“Kit Korner” columnist Paul Newman casts a net over two major European model figure shows: Euro Militaire in Folkestone, Kent, England, Sept. 20-21; and Scale Model Challenge in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Oct. 12. He checks out the vendors, explores the exhibitions and shares photos of stunning entries in the events’ competitions.
Every year Stuart looks forward to reviewing seasonal sets in the last edition of TS&MF expected to arrive in the majority of readers’ hands before Christmas. The year 2014 is no exception and this time he bring tidings of new releases from both King & Country Ltd. and W. Britain. The sets are highlighted by a common theme inspired by the unofficial truce that spread along World War I’s Western Front at Christmastime in 1914.
