OGIER TAKES A SOMBRE RALLY GB
Sebastien Ogier didn’t want to get out of the Volkswagen motorhome. It
was pouring with rain, he was on the telephone and just hours earlier, a state of emergency had been declared in his home country. Ogier’s mind was everywhere on Saturday morning. Everywhere except Wales. Like the rest of the world, Ogier had watched in horror as the full extent of what had happened in Paris unfolded. Standing in Corris just after daybreak, he wasn’t a three-time world champion, he was a proud but devastated Frenchman. Nothing made sense. But he tried to make sense of it. “This doesn’t matter,” he said, nodding in the direction of the assembled rally cars. “This is secondary. It’s horrible. In the first stage, I couldn’t really… I mean…” He struggled on. “I have to try to put this to one side, it’s so hard to concentrate.” Arriving in Wales, the Volkswagen star was still sore, metaphorically speaking, from his powerstage shunt in Spain. He wanted to put that right and end the season with one of those emphatic wins for which he’s becoming famous. But now he looked like a man who
wanted to be elsewhere.
