No matter how may times we use the words ‘classic’ and ‘timeless’ when
referring to wedding styling I am always amazed how quickly the trends in
wedding flowers evolve. It wasn’t that long ago that it was all about hand-tied posies, old world roses in muted colours and tall over-the-top table centres. Too much colour was regarded as ‘granny chic’. But that has all changed now with colourful full-blown blooms and previously forgotten flowers such as carnations, cosmos, Queen Anne’s lace, nigella, astilbe and maiden hair fern all taking centre stage. The shape of the bridal bouquet has changed too, as brides have moved away from the traditional round cluster to more relaxed open bouquets where the flowers and foliage are arranged in imperfect shapes, making the bouquet appear to have just been picked from the garden.
Our feature story, Fine Art Flowers, reflects these changes perfectly. Florists have created bouquets that show how a bride can make a statement with her flowers. Colour does not have to be restrained; sometimes you can get the effect you want by blending and contrasting many colours thereby creating an extravagent bouquet of sumptuous colour. However, you can create a bouquet with a limited colour range and include textural elements that make it look as though it was just picked from the woods. Wild trailing foliage, ferns and herbs have become an important addition, creating texture and adding interest to the overall composition.
I hope you enjoy this issue as you flip from one gorgeous flowerfilled
page to another gathering inspiration and ideas to have the
best wedding flowers on your day.
