There are few things more uplifting than throwing the windows wide open to let in the fresh air with a cup of coffee in hand. Perhaps taking a brief stroll (or, like me, an Instagram scroll) in nature. It just seems such a shame to be cooped up in a hot kitchen slaving over dinner when you could be out enjoying the glorious summer weather while it lasts. So, it got me thinking – we all love a good BBQ, but why not go that one step further and put the entire kitchen outdoors...? Call me crazy, but once you’ve read our guide to Alfresco Living on page 96, you’ll be drawing up weatherproofing plans and wishing you could wheel your range cooker to the garden in no time. Heading back indoors, we also have plenty of interior inspiration to whet your design appetite. Our real homes this issue offer a plethora of planning ideas – on page 24 in The Right Move we tell you about Rachael’s coach house renovation which pays homage to its history in such a sympathetic way. In Lofty Intentions, page 38, a breathtakingly large cathedral-esque space threatened to overwhelm any kitchcn layout, but the designers worked their magic to create a hub that is totally worthy of its Manhatten-style loft home. Awkward spaces continue to be a theme in Old Meets New, as Serena’s Georgian property contained a multitude of orginal features which, although stunning, made fitting a suitable kitchen somewhat difficult – but not impossible. The result? A stunning, familyfriendly floorplan that works with the house instead of against it – turn to page 48 to find out more. To honour her mother’s memory, Marie worked with her daughter to create a sociable kitchen that was both fresh and ergonomic, reflecting the beautiful colours of the garden – you’ll find more of their story in All Welcome on page 60.
