Your Dog

June 2024 Welcome to the June issue, which (in publishing terms) means we’re busy working on the July issue – how did we get to this point in 2024 already?! Have you had a great/memorable day out already this year? I spent the weekend working, though both days were such fun you can’t really call it work. Saturday, we were at All About Dogs, Newark, meeting dog families who’d come for various dog-friendly activities and displays. And on Sunday, a new statue of the Queen and her Corgis was unveiled in Oakham, Rutland (more on page 9). A big turnout, national press in attendance (and one from the New York Times), and such a wonderful memorial to our Queen as well as a celebration of her love for dogs. During his speech, the sculptor, Hywel Pratley, thanked the many people involved from the start to completion line – including the person who made the light bulb in his studio! Yes, he considered ALL the people, from the clay diggers to the fundraisers… and then you realise how many people were involved in making this sculpture happen. All the roles we play in society and in our jobs connect together to complete something great. The same applies to an event like All About Dogs (and magazines). As Hywel said, we take for granted the social network that upholds our lives, but in the world’s chaos, the Queen was a still point, a constant. It was so fitting for the statue to include Her Majesty’s Corgis, as I can only imagine her dogs acted like a constant for her. Simple moments of rest, play and love were shared with her dogs as we all do with our own. And the role dogs play in society, like the man making the lightbulb, keeps us all ticking along.
