This month we’re talking sustainable design and are looking
at ways we can make our kitchens and bathrooms more
eco-friendly. We look at five amazing kitchen projects that
feature the latest sustainable cabinetry designs and, Vicki
discovers in her buyer’s guide, there are huge changes afoot in kitchen
worktops with lots of cool and innovative new materials on the market.
Our bathrooms are responsible for almost 70 per cent of household
water consumption, according to the Energy Saving Trust, which is a
scary statistic, but luckily lots of manufacturers are taking the issue
seriously. The next generation of bathrooms will include low-water
flushing toilets, recycling showers, water-saving taps and efficient
showerheads, and there are many other new products available to help
us do our bit.
Our cover home this month is the most incredible project in East
London, with cityscape views on one side of the house and Epping
Forest on the other. Owners Andrew and Kate compiled a very short
hit list of suitable streets in Leytonstone and were delighted to come
across a Victorian home that needed a total renovation. They worked
with Sara Moody of Shacklewell Architects to help tell their building’s
story. The result is a contemporary home that’s been renovated from
top to bottom. With a spacious kitchen/dining space plus a glazed link,
it nevertheless remains true to its Victorian heritage.
