We already knew most of the details but that didn’t abate our appetite for the official reveal of the new 911, which occurred just ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show last month. The second generation 991 is a subtle evolution over the outgoing model aesthetically speaking, but as we all now know, it’s under that rear deck lid that things get more exciting. Although we’re sure to miss the guttural growl of a naturally aspirated Carrera, a new turbocharged Carrera sporting a 3-litre twin turbo powerplant still holds excitement. The surprise reveal of Porsche’s first battery-powered sports car concept, the Mission E neatly links its modern motorsport activities with its road car plans for the future, although it too does represent another step change away from hybrid power. Providing us with a hint of the technology an electric 911 could harbour, together with clues to the styling of the next generation Panamera, the Mission E is the car Porsche enviably had to undertake sooner rather than later. It would be easy to dismiss the Mission E as a flight of fancy with no bearing in the real world, but that would be foolhardy. Although Porsche has labelled it as a ‘design study’ it already employs technology currently in use by electric car market leaders BMW and Tesla, while also fitting with Porsche’s rumoured plans for model expansion. Matthias Müller said the Mission E is approximately five years from production, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised if many of the elements on the car appear in Porsche showrooms far sooner than that…
