Gardens Illustrated  |  July 2022
In the July 2022 issue of Gardens Illustrated, we take a tour of a rectory garden designed by James Alexander-Sinclair, who turned an exposed and outward-looking site into a series of intimate and inviting spaces. We drop in on a modernist garden in London by Tom Massey, who found an ingenious solution to creating a garden that leads from the lower-ground floor of a Victorian house. We visit the Laundry Garden in Wales, just 10 years old but feeling remarkably established thanks to its use of reclaimed materials and abundant planting. We travel to near Toledo, Spain, where Fernando Martos has created a Mediterranean garden with a difference, and immerse ourselves in on a jungle garden in Surrey. We also get design tips from Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson, who have given a garden mostly laid to lawn with a naturalistic makeover. Garden maker and flower grower Becky Crowley gives advice on growing hollyhocks and we call in at Abi and Tom’s Garden Plants, with its lush display beds of tough plants. We meet Matt Somerville, creator of beautiful and unusual ‘freedom’ beehives. And we welcome Alice Vincent, our new back page columnist.
