Coast  |  No.102 Best British Breaks
This issue is a celebration of the traditional British holiday,
from castles and cream teas to beach huts and buckets
and spades. Some people may dream of hopping on a plane to
warmer climes, but for me, the British coast has the greatest draw.
I grew up holidaying in the British Isles, sailing around ever more
remote islands, building rafts to cross Scottish lochs, trying to light
a fire on the beach in the rain to cook supper, and I learnt there was fun to be had whatever the weather. Admittedly, two weeks of rain on Lundy was tough for a 13-year-old who wanted to be at a Gary Numan concert… However, it is these more unusual and challenging experiences that populate my childhood memories now, and I am grateful for this.
As with the British coast, I hope there is something for everyone in this issue, whether you crave the natural isolation of Lundy (pg 80), a historic visit to the Channel Islands (pg 88) or a foodie break in Lyme Regis (pg 56), the perfect getaway is right here.
