You may recall the widespread public amusement when sometime Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that the Arctic Monkeys were his favourite band, despite such a fact being almost demographically impossible. While this column is hardly the correct forum for a discussion of Mr Brown’s cultural preferences (unless he plays bass – can anyone confirm?), the interesting aspect of his claim was that it indicated the depth of the Monkeys’ penetration into this country’s general awareness. They’re the biggest band of the so-called ‘indie’ persuasion in years, and bassist Nick O’Malley was an obvious choice for our front cover as their headline slot at the Leeds and Reading festivals approached. Talking of which, you can win yourself a pair of weekend tickets for either festival, worth a whopping £400. Don’t thank us, it’s what we do.
The rest of this issue is devoted as always to as wide a spread of bass coverage as possible. Chris Squire and Tony Levin hardly need an introduction to fans of classic prog, while Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew and Body Count’s Vince Dennis bring the tough stuff while remaining expertly melodic. As for reviews, we’ve got a smorgasbord of gear from Mike Lull, MTD, Gibson and Carvin for you, and a killer range of essential tuition columns from the very best educators in the business. Take BGM into the garden while the sunny weather lasts, why don’t you?
