Your Dog  |  Your Dog Magazine November 2022
Dogs are known for their stoicism — so often they soldier on despite feeling uncomfortable or experiencing pain. In our lead feature this issue, animal behaviourist Toni Shelbourne explains how pain can impact on your dog’s behaviour and be the hidden cause behind many behaviour problems. So, what does pain look like? And how can you spot the signs that all is not well with your dog? Turn to page 10 to find out.
There’s more useful, practical advice on page 14 in our first aid feature ‘How to cope in a canine crisis’. While most days out with our dogs are pleasant or routine experiences, how well prepared are you should the unexpected happen? First aid expert Kerry Rhodes recommends three items you should have with you at all times, and offers more tips and advice on how to cope when things go wrong.
There’s the lovely story of Britain’s first hedgehog detection dog on page 30. Springer Spaniel Henry had already been through five homes when he came to trainer Louise Wilson, founder of Conservation K9 Consultancy. His training was certainly not going to be plain sailing; he was bright, playful — and very challenging. But, despite some testing times, Henry has proved to be brilliant at detection work — and is described by Louise as the best dog she’s ever had and one of whom she is immensely proud.
And last (but by no means least) in the feature ‘Small dog, big attitude?’ (on page 52) Julie Hill takes a closer look at small dog syndrome, and asks does it exist and, if so, what does it actually mean? Some experienced small dog owners give their views, and Julie speaks to behaviourist Rachel Rodgers, who specialises in helping small dogs and their owners.
No doubt about it, you’ll find lots of food for thought and lots more great reading in this issue of Your Dog Magazine — enjoy!
