The Australian commercial aviation industry is a tough nut to crack. Since the dawn of commercial flight, Aussie travellers have largely seen limited options when considering air carriers for domestic travel.
The origins of Australia’s aviation duopoly date back to the 1940s when the nation’s then-Menzies government implemented the Two Airlines Policy. Incumbents, the privately owned Ansett and government-controlled Trans Australia Airlines (later Australian Airlines), benefited greatly from the policy that effectively ringfenced capital city flights for the two established carriers.
