Cage & Aviary Birds  |  No.5803 An eye for a Crane
RECENTLY, MY VOTING card for the May 22
European Parliamentary elections plopped
through the letterbox. Will it get used? It surely
will, not least because I’m going to express my
support for those candidates who have,
sensibly, declined to sign up to the Eurogroup for Animals
pledges. (See Alderton’s Observations, March 26.)
I’m always sceptical about the Next Great Threat To Our
Hobby. But those pledges include one to “work to reduce the
number of species and animals being kept as exotic pets”
and another to “endeavour to minimise live animal
transport”. Plainly the group is thinking mostly of cats, dogs
and farm animals, yet nowhere are cagebirds excluded. The
brush is far too broad and some limits need to be defined.
