Cage & Aviary Birds  |  No.5805 Hands Across the Water
UNKNOWN BIRD’ MYSTERIES are potent
things, aren’t they? I’m thinking of David
Alderton’s account on page 17 of the enigmatic
“Whitley’s conure”. Here is a bird that’s known
from a single specimen. Is this a genuine
species that’s still out there somewhere, or one that has
recently become extinct, or “merely” a hybrid?
Given the existence of a specimen, you might expect
that modern DNA wizardry could settle the hybrid question.
It isn’t always that simple, though: witness the Kill Bill bird.
A few years ago, I searched for this mystery bird in Peru,
without success. It is not in any of the books, but has been
seen a few times in one small area.
