THIS WEEK, WE include our now-traditional
supplement to publicise the National Exhibition
at Stafford on October 13. I’d like to thank all
those who have advertised in or otherwise
supported the supplement, which tells you all
you need to know about this unique event.
The National is now the top day in the calendar for bird
fanciers. It has no rival as a marketplace for quality surplus
stock as well as birdkeeping supplies. What’s more, the
show section will be bigger and better this year, with a new
presence from Border, Norwich and Yorkshire canaries.
Overall, the event represents our hobby at its most vibrant.
Who makes it happen? Above all, it’s the loyal main
sponsors (the Birdcare Company and Johnston & Jeff) and
the main organisers (the Parrot Society UK). Without them,
there would be
no great day out
to look forward
to. Well done and
thanks to all
three. And see
you there.
■ Ed’s Ad of
the Week:
A breeder in Hertfordshire is offering Corsican citril finches
for sale at £149 a pop. (See Bargain Box, page 28.) These
are subtle, fascinating birds – I’d like to hear from anyone
with experience of keeping or breeding this or the closely
related Carduelis citrinella.
■ Ed’s Quote of the Week: “Since her arrival in July, the
female Marabou stork has spent most days in the paddock
with the male, but is yet to have close interaction, say park
staff members.” See story on page 3. “Close interaction?”
That’s a new one on me – but knowing female Marabous, I
can’t say I blame the male too much.
And finally... last Thursday lunchtime I took a stroll
around the pond near the office, and guess what popped
up in a nearby hedge? A wryneck (Jynx
torquilla)! I’m sorry to say the air turned
blue – but it made my week. I hope
yours is just as good.

Cage & Aviary Birds is the world’s only weekly newspaper for birdkeepers. Written by bird experts for bird fans, it is packed with news, advice and comment from the avicultural scene. An essential resource for members of bird clubs and societies, it also offers an unrivalled marketplace for sellers and buyers of birds and all bird-related products, both in the British Isles and around the world.
As a weekly, it’s a uniquely comprehensive and topical source of news on all subjects that affect the birdkeeper: from legal changes and government consultations, through zoo and bird-park events, scientific research and business news, to the achievements of personalities in the hobby, as well as clubs and their members.
While it’s first and foremost a newspaper, each issue also offers a wealth of practical advice and tips from the top names in the bird world, plus opinion, controversy, species and hobbyist profiles, humour and nostalgia. Bargain-hunters eagerly await their copy to scan its paid and free adverts, and it is quite simply The Bible for show reports, club news and events.
Since 1902, Cage & Aviary Birds has consistently been the first-choice publication for keen birdkeepers, whether experienced or new to the hobby.
