Red Rock Review, the literary journal of the College of Southern Nevada (Las Vegas), is a premier source of short fiction, poetry, essays, and reviews. We have published authors from all over the world but have a special interest in literature pertaining to the American Southwest. Published twice a year, Red Rock Review has featured notable writers such as David Benioff, Catherine Ryan Hyde, Marge Piercy, Michael McClure, Diane Di Prima, Michael Cadnum, Charles Harper Webb, Naomi Shihab Nye, Alberto Ríos, Ron Carlson, Susan Vreeland, Robert Wrigley, and Willis Barnstone. While we look for character-driven stories held together by conflict, we also consider pieces that experiment with traditional form. In poetry, we look for well-crafted pieces that speak to our place in the natural world and that take thoughtful or humorous snapshots of the lives we lead. Essays typically examine lifestyles of Nevada and the Southwest. Reviews focus on recent releases in fiction and poetry.
Turps Banana is a painting magazine. No Advertising, no Professional Critics, no Life Style Drivel. Turps Banana is the only painting magazine written exclusively by painters. The idea to establish a magazine about painting, made predominately by painters, became concrete during one of our many discussions / arguments about our own work and other painters that interested us. We, along with most of our friends, have a long history of such discussions (usually in the pub) and built on fairly regular studio visits. These discussions are vital to us and we wondered if there might be a demand for a magazine that could act as a forum for the ideas and views of painters. Partly because art criticism is not a science and because we believe good painting is not driven by ideological principles, Turps Banana does not carry a singular position or attitude about painting, but is as open as possible, in order to allow dialogues to develop. What still excites us most is that, uniquely the contributors are not critics or professional art writers, but practitioners whose contributions will hopefully illuminate their own practice as they reflect on their contemporaries and their interest in the history of painting.
