Bass Player UK  |  91 May 2013
If you’re anything like us, your idea of a pretty wild night out is a jam with your chums over a few beers, followed by a lie-in the next day, ideally with a bacon sandwich and an aspirin. Right? Well, that concept of debauchery doesn’t apply when you’re in a stadium-sized metal band, and especially if that band was called Pantera, the hardest-partying band ever formed. This month’s cover star Rex Brown was an integral part of Pantera for the Texan group’s entire career, enduring death, addiction and more road and air miles than any five normal bass players. His story, told to us as he releases his new autobiography (win a copy in our News section), will leave you speechless.
At the opposite end of the spectrum in almost every conceivable way, other than he too is a bass player of almost inhuman skill, is the great Victor Wooten, who talks this month about his upbringing as a musician. We also bring you frank chats with Devin Townsend, perhaps the most inventive musician on the planet, and Stone Sour’s Johny Chow, a man whose command of both beard and bass is equally impressive.
Check out our world-class reviews section too. Six grand for a bass? Why not, we reckon, when it’s for a bass like the Ritter R8. But we’re not all about the high numbers at BGM, as you’ll know by now, and the Godin, Taurus and Fat Boy gear we review elsewhere in the issue cover a wide range of budgets and requirements. The same philosophy applies to our tuition columns, where you can get a dose of basic theory, plenty of intermediate technique and the most advanced bass tips known to mankind, all within a single issue. See you on the other side!
